Mr. Rooker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many letters of complaint his Department has received since May 1979 in respect of the investigatory powers of the Inland Revenue.

Mr. Lawson:

Since May 1979 we have received about 240 letters from taxpayers complaining about an Inland Revenue investigation into their tax affairs.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many persons are currently working in the Inland Revenue's special offices and what was the number in May 1979.
