Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the amount spent per pupil in both primary and secondary education in Scotland overall and each of the regional and island authorities.

Figures for expenditure on primary and secondary pupils separately are not available centrally for all the regional and islands councils. Those which are available are shown in the table below, and relate to 1978–79.

On the basis of these figures, the current expenditure per pupil in Scotland for the same period is estimated to have been £413 for primary and £700 for secondary.
