Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many representations and letters he has received on the consultative paper on assisted places; and if he will name the organisations which have expressed their opposition to the scheme.

Forty bodies responded to the consultative paper. Thirteen of these—listed below—were wholly or partly opposed to the scheme. In addition, a number of the grant-aided secondary schools objected to the proposal to phase out the block grant.

  • The Scottish Consumer Council (in consultation with the Scottish Parent Teacher Council)
  • The Confederation for the Advancement of State Education (Dumfries and Galloway Branch)
  • The Association of Educational Advisers in Scotland
  • The National Association of Social Workers in Education.
