§ 33. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give, for the period from 1 August 1980 until the latest and most convenient stated date, the number of deportations recommended to him by British courts of law; how many of these affected those charged and found guilty of offences committed outside the American embassy during the recent Iranian student disturbances; in how many cases he has or has not agreed to carry out these court recommendations; how many of these affect the Iranian students; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Raison:Between 1 August and 30 September 1980 the courts made 227 recommendations for deportation, of which 46 were in respect of Iranian nationals who were convicted of offences connected with the demonstration outside the American embassy in London. Of these 46 Iranians, deportation orders have been made in 41 cases, one has left the United Kingdom under supervised departure and four cases are still under consideration.
I regret that it is not possible to establish without disproportionate expense how many deportation orders have been made in respect of the other 181 people who were recommended for deportation during the period in question.
