HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 cc167-8W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are currently receiving temporary short-time compensation payments; and what is the system for the remainder of the year in the North Humberside development area.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 410]: I regret that the information is not available in the form requested. However, in the Yorkshire and Humberside region, for the month of June 1980, payments were approved in respect of some 13,500 workers on short-time, under the scheme. The present scheme, which is due to close for applications on 31 March 1981, will be reviewed together with other special employment measures later in the year, in line with normal practice.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what estimates he has made of the cost of the temporary short-time compensation scheme for the coming year in the North Humberside development area.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 410]: I regret that the information is not available in the form requested.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many applications currently are being processed, to the nearest convenient date, for payments in the temporary short-time compensation scheme in the North Humberside development area.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 410]: I regret the information is not available in the form requested. However, in the Yorkshire and Humberside region, for the month of June 1980, 207 claims were approved for payment, covering some 13,500 workers on short time.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the total annual cost of the temporary short-time compensation scheme in the North Humberside development area.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 410]: I regret that the information is not available in the form requested. However, in the Yorkshire and Humberside and Northern regions, expenditure under the temporary short-time working compensation (TSTWC) scheme for the financial year 1979–80 was £5.5 million and £4.8 million for the first three months of the financial year 1980–81.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the annual number of refusals for payments in the temporary short-time compensation scheme whilst it has been in operation; and what has been the actual percentage granted in the North Humberside development area.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 410]: I regret that the information is not available in the form requested. However, in the Yorkshire and Humberside region, during the first 12 months of the scheme to 31 March 1980, five applications were rejected and seven from 1 April 1980 to 20 June 1980. As at 30 June 1980, 81 per cent. of applications processed had been approved.
