HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 cc15-6W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the companies in Dundee which have closed down since May 1979; and if he will list the names or number of companies which have made redundancies in Dundee involving 10 or more people during the same period.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher:

Comprehensive information on redundancies and closures is not available. From May 1979 to date, 17 instances of redundancy involving 10 or more people and resulting in closure have been notified to the Manpower Services Commission as taking place in Dundee. During the same period a further 40 companies in Dundee have notified redundancies involving 10 or more people. Information on closures and redundancies is given to the Manpower Services Commission in confidence and the names of companies cannot therefore be divulged.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of companies that have closed down in Scotland since May 1979; and how many jobs were lost as a result.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher:

Comprehensive information on companies that closed is not available, but I have been informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the number of closures notified in Scotland since May 1979, in establishments employing 10 or more people, has been 233. The number of jobs involved was 24,740.
