HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 c183W
Mr. Lyell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many citizens with rights of citizenship both in the United Kingdom and in the Republic of Ireland are estimated to be resident in the United Kingdom at the present time;

(2) how many citizens of the Republic of Ireland, who are not also citizens of the United Kingdom, are estimated to be resident in the United Kingdom at the present time.

Sir George Young:

It is estimated that there are between 580,000 and 680,000 persons resident in the United Kingdom who were either born in the Irish Republic, or have Irish nationality. Of these about 75 per cent. were born in the Irish Republic and say they have Irish nationality, about 20 per cent. were born in the Republic but say they have United Kingdom nationality, and most of the remainder, about 5 per cent. of the total, say they are of Irish nationality but were born in the United Kingdom.

These estimates are derived from the labour force survey which was conducted by voluntary household interviews at about 80.000 addresses in the United Kingdom, May to June 1979.
