HC Deb 24 November 1980 vol 994 c17W
Mr. John Page

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average weekly pay and hours worked by an individual fireman in the years 1978–79 and 1979–80 in the Harrow area, the Greater London Council area and the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Brittan

The basic weekly rate of pay for a qualified fireman in his fifth year of service was £88–30 with effect from November 1978 and £106–39 from November 1979. London weighting is paid to all members of the London Fire Brigade, which includes the Harrow area; I understand that the amount paid in November 1978 was £468 per annum and that in November 1979 it was £543 per annum. The normal working week for firemen was 48 hours in November 1978; by November 1979 it was 42 hours.
