§ Mr. Hoosonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will identify any 441W items in Votes of Departments other than the Welsh Office which include specific provision for the use of the Welsh language, and any other items in which some provision for the Welsh language, even if not quantifiable, is included.
§ Mr. BiffenI regret that the information requested is not available centrally. Departments such as DHSS and Inland Revenue printed leaflets and forms in Welsh and public bodies such as the Countryside Commission, the Arts Council and the University Grants Committee make grants to other bodies, part of which will be spent on the Welsh language—for example, signposting of footpaths, support for arts in the Welsh language and courses for the study of Welsh. But such expenditure is not separately identified and details could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
