HC Deb 13 November 1980 vol 992 c355W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the certified normal accommodation in prisons estimated for 1981 and 1982.

Mr. Brittan

As indicated in my reply to a question by the hon. Member on 29 July, the estimate of certified normal accommodation for all prison department establishments at the end of 1980 is approximately 38,900 places. When the new prison at Frankland is brought permanently into use early in 1982, it will provide 450 additional places, but some places may have to be taken out of use at other establishments by reason of decay or to allow for refurbishing or repair.
