asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many arrests have been made under section 12(1)(b) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (a) in Wales and (b) in England.

Figures are readily available only for 1979 and the first nine months of 1980; in this period four persons were detained in Wales and 238 persons were detained in England under section 12(1) of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1976. Separate figures for Wales and England relating to earlier periods could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many extensions of detention have been made under section 12(1)(b) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act in (a) Wales and (b) in England in each year since 1976, and so far in 1980.

Figures are readily available only for 1979 and the first nine months of 1980. In this period no extensions of detention were granted with respect to persons detained under section 12(1) in Wales. Extensions of such deten- tions in England were granted with respect to 71 persons detained in 1979, and 13 in the first nine months of 1980.

Separate figures for Wales and England relating to earlier periods could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
