asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if any of the mentally disordered prisoners awaiting transfer to a National Health Service hospital are waiting for a place in the area of the North East Thames regional health authority.

Yes. There are two mentally disordered prisoners for whom places are currently being sought in hospitals in this region.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many mentally disordered persons were in prison on the latest available date.

On 30 June 1980, 250 sentenced prisoners and 204 unsentenced prisoners were considered by their prison medical officers to be mentally disordered within the meaning of the Mental Health Act 1959.
