HC Deb 13 November 1980 vol 992 c437W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many self-employed people, expressed as a percentage of the whole, were subjected to an in-depth investigation by the Inland Revenue in the year 1978–79; and how many employed people, expressed as a percentage of the whole, were subjected to an in-depth investigation in the year 1978–79.

Mr. Peter Rees

During the year ended 31 October 1979 approximately 46,000 investigations into the accounts of self-employed people were completed—about 2.5 per cent. of the total. In addition there were about 4,500 investigations into self-employed people who had failed to notify chargeability to tax and about 2,000 into company accounts.

Approximately 63,000 other tax investigations were completed. Most of those concerned employed people—about 0.25 per cent. of the whole.
