asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what reductions have been made in the staffing of district valuers' offices during the past 12 months; and what further reductions are planned.

The total number of permanent staff in post in the Inland Revenuew's valuation offices fell from 8,661 at 1 October 1979 to 7,346 at 1 October 1980, a reduction of 1,315. Further reductions are planned but the arrangements and timing remain to be settled.
