asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many construction workers were employed at the latest convenient date in (a) Wolverhampton, (b) the West Midlands and (c) England and Wales as a whole; and what percentage of (i) those unemployed and (ii) the available work force this represents in each case.

At June 1977, the latest date for which employment estimates for local areas are available, there were 8,332 employees in employment in the construction industry in the Wolverhampton travel-to-work area. These represented 90.8 per cent. of all construction employees, employed and unemployed, in that area.

The latest national and regional provisional employment estimates are for June 1980. At that date there were 102,600 employees in the construction
