HC Deb 10 November 1980 vol 992 c49W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will list the countries with which the United Kingdom maintains full diplomatic relations, where British citizens are currently detained or imprisoned without trial.

Mr. Hurd

In the following countries, United Kingdom citizens are detained without, on the basis of our most recent information, having been charged or tried: Iran (4), Libya (4), South Africa (1).

At any one time, there are, in many countries, a number of United Kingdom nationals who are temporarily held in custody while awaiting trial or the conclusion of investigations expected to lead to trial.
