HC Deb 04 November 1980 vol 991 c527W
Mr. Charles R. Morris

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received from the Manchester justices about the inadequacies of the law in proceeding against cruising motorists seeking the services of prostitutes; and what reply he has sent.

Mr. Brittan

The Manchester city justices communicated to my right hon. Friend a resolution which they had passed to the effect that it should be a criminal offence for a man to accept unlawful solicitation from a common prostitute, and they asked us to consider amending the law in this way when an opportunity for legislation occurs. We have informed the justices in reply that the law on sexual offences, including prostitution and related matters, is under review by the Criminal Law Revision Committee, in consultation with the Policy Advisory Committee on Sexual Offences; the Government think it right to await the outcome of this review before considering changes in this area of the law.
