HC Deb 03 November 1980 vol 991 cc434-5W
Mr. Dobson

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will publish the date of arrival in the United Kingdom and the date on which diplomatic accreditation was given to Mr. Ben van der Klashorst and Mr. Ron Shardelow.

Mr. Luce

The South African Embassy notified the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 3 September 1979 of the appointment of Mr. van der Klashorst as a member of the South African Embassy staff with effect from 31 August 1979, and of his having arrived in the United Kingdom on that date. On 28 February 1978 the South African Embassy notified the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the appointment of Mr. Shardelow from 21 February 1978. The form of notification then in use did not require information about date of arrival in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Lord Privy Seal if Her Majesty's Government give diplomatic status to South African diplomats who are seconded from the South African national intelligence service.

Mr. Luce

All Governments of States with which we maintain diplomatic relations are entitled, subject to the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961, to "freely appoint" the members of staff of their embassies in London without notifying Her Majesty's Government of their departmental origins. Her Majesty's Government accord the normal diplomatic privileges and immunities to any persons so appointed.
