HC Deb 03 November 1980 vol 991 cc420-1W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of police officers now receives training in firearms; on how many occasions firearms have been issued in each year since 1970; and if he will break the figures down to show for what purpose the guns were issued.

Mr. Brittan

Details of the numbers of police officers trained in the use of firearms are not held centrally. Information on the number of occasions in England and Wales on which firearms were issued to the police in connection with an incident involving armed criminals since 1970 was provided in reply to the hon. Member's question on 5 February.—[Vol. 978, c. 100–104.] The information for 1979 was then incomplete: the final total was 8,314.
