HC Deb 03 November 1980 vol 991 c462W
Mr. John Evans

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what additional Customs and Excise staff would be required if a duty-free shop were installed at Liverpool airport.

Mr. Peter Rees

There would be a direct need for one additional Customs and Excise officer but there would also be additional work which would need to be absorbed by existing staff.

Mr. John Evans

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the estimated annual cost to public funds of additional Customs and Excise staff if a duty-free shop were installed at Liverpool airport.

Mr. Peter Rees

The estimated annual cost to public funds of the staff directly employed would be in the order of £11,000, but there would be significant additional indirect costs which it would be difficult to quantify.
