HC Deb 03 November 1980 vol 991 cc410-1W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if, in view of the growth of imports of manufactured goods including counterfeited goods, he will take steps to ensure that all imported commodities conform to British standards wherever applicable.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

If imported goods are found to be counterfeit they can be dealt with under the provisions of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968. A new GATT agreement on counterfeiting is also in prospect. The scope for requiring conformity with national standards is limited by obligations under the GATT agreement on technical barriers to trade and by Community treaties.
