Mr. Jim Lester

Information regarding the number of firms that have closed and the number of jobs lost is not available. However, the number of proposed closures and job losses in the above areas notified to my Department under the redundancy handling provisions of the Employment Protection Act 1975 from May 1979 to September 1980 is as follows:

Employees Establishment
(a) North West 61,798 889
(b) Merseyside 10,795 154
(c) Kirkby 674 13
(d) Ormskirk 62 2

The figures are for redundancies involving 10 or more employees. Employers are not required to notify the Department when proposed closures do not take place.
