§ Mr. Gordon Wilsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his forecast of summer school leavers in Dundee; what are the existing levels of unemployment and vacancies for young people; and what arrangements are being made to provide work opportunities in time for the summer leaving date.
§ Mr. Alexander FletcherAn estimated 2,400 young people will be leaving school in Dundee this summer, of whom 1,800 are expected to be seeking employment. In April 1980 669 young people under 18 years of age were registered as unemployed in Dundee and 14 vacancies were 307W notified at the careers office there; in addition some of the 472 vacancies notified at the employment office may have been suitable for young people. The careers service is carrying out an intensive canvass of employers in the city to obtain vacancies for summer school leavers and the Manpower Services Commission has renewed its undertaking to provide places on the youth opportunities programme for school leavers unable to find a permanent job.
