HC Deb 21 May 1980 vol 985 cc220-1W
Mr. Henderson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what response he has made to the telex of 2 May from Mr. David Aitcheson on behalf of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, the British Fishing Federation and the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Younger

This is one of a number of representations that I have received on the difficulties facing the fishing industry. Together with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, I met the representatives of the fishermen on 13 May to discuss the current state of the industry, including their proposal that imports of fish into the United Kingdom should be controlled. It is not open to the United Kingdom to take unilateral action on imports but the Government are actively involved in the discussions currently taking place in Brussels on the question of reference prices and the level of tariff suspensions.
