asked the Minister of Transport what current steps are being taken to reduce Civil Service manpower in his Department.

Mr. Fowler

As announced in the House on 6 December last, my Department is due to save 2,480 staff, or some 18 per cent. of its staff costs, over the three years 1980–81 to 1982–83. In addition to these reductions, I shall of course play a full part in securing the further savings announced by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 13 May.
