HL Deb 16 May 1980 vol 409 c540WA
Lord MELCHETT

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give separate figures for the weight of cannibis, heroin and cocaine seized by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise during 1978, and the weight of cannabis, heroin and cocaine seized by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise during 1978 as a direct result of information from authorised telephone intercepts gained by, or passed on to, Her Majesty's Customs and Excise prior to such seizures.

The MINISTER of STATE, TREASURY (Lord Cockfield)

In 1978 Her Majesty's Customs and Excise seized a total of 6241.664 kilos of cannibis in various forms, 56.693 kilos of heroin and 14.762 kilos of cocaine.

As to the part played by interception in these seizures I have nothing to add to the information given in paragraph 22 of the White Paper Comnd. 7873 (The Interception of Communications in Great Britain).

House adjourned at two minutes past three o'clock.
