HL Deb 15 May 1980 vol 409 cc446-7WA
Baroness JEGER

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their policy to guarantee the present boundaries of Belize; and what consultations are taking place with Guatemala about these boundaries.

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN and COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS (Lord Carrington)

A British delegation, led by my honourable friend the Minister of State (Mr. Ridley), will open talks with representatives of the Guatemalan Government, led by the Guatemalan Foreign Minister, on 19th May in Bermuda. The Government's intention is to clear the way for a quick and secure independence for Belize. The British garrison is continuing to defend its boundaries.
