§ Mr. Gryllsasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many hospitals with secure accommodation will be made available in 1980–81 to accommodate the current level of mentally subnormals at present in Her Majesty's prisons in (a) England and Wales and (b) Greater London.
§ Sir George YoungOnly a small proportion of those mentally disordered prisoners who satisfy the conditions for detention under the Mental Health Act 1959 are classified as subnormal. Of the 64 units or wards used as secure accommodation mentioned in my reply to my hon. Friend on 9 May—[Vol. 984, c.267.]— 17 are in mental handicap hospitals: none of these is in the Greater London area. No later information is readily available.
