§ Mr. Alfred Morrisasked the Secretary of State for Trade what consideration was given to the events surrounding the fire at Woolworth's store in Piccadilly, Manchester, in drawing up the Upholstered Furniture (Safety) Regulations 1980; whether the tests set down in the regulations are adequate, in view of the coroner's findings on the Manchester fire; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. Sally OppenheimI refer the right hon. Member to the reply I gave to his question on 18 March. I am satisfied that the tests stipulated in the draft Upholstered Furniture (Safety) Regulations 1980, which are shortly to be debated in Parliament, should, if complied with, provide protection against the risks of smokers' materials igniting upholstered furniture.
