HC Deb 06 May 1980 vol 984 cc16-7W
31. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give for the longest and most convenient stated period of time the amounts of revenue obtained by the Treasury from the tax upon cigarettes, cigars, tobaccos and snuff.

Mr. Peter Rees

In the period from 1 January 1978, when the conversion to the tobacco products duty was completed, to 31 December 1979, excise duty revenues from cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products were £4,294.9 million, £132.9 million and £365.7 million, respectively. In this period snuff has been exempt from excise duty.

It is estimated that in these two years the amount of VAT charged on sales of cigarettes was about £650 million and on all other tobacco products about £100 million.
