Mr. Trippier

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many students in teacher training colleges are training to become physical education teachers;

(2) how many students in teacher training colleges are training to become teachers in mathematics;

(3) how many students in teacher training colleges are training to become teachers in science subjects.

In the academic year 1977–78, the latest year for which complete information is available, the numbers of non-graduate students in England and Wales following 3 and 4-year courses of initial training in the subjects stated in preparation for teaching pupils in the secondary or middle years of schooling were:

courses of training for teaching pupils of secondary age:

more A-level passes and (f) three or more A-level passes.
