asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the present size of the United Kingdom pig breeding herd; and what were the comparable figures in (a) the livestock census of 1975 and (b) that of 1970.

In December 1979, the most recent census for which results are available, the provisional number of sows and gilts in pig was 816 thousand head compared with 845 and 986 thousand head in December 1975 and 1970 respectively.
