§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will publish in the Official Report the number of (a) doctors, and grades, (b) nurses, all grades, and (c) ancillary staff, not in administration, employed in hospitals in the National Health Service in 1970, 1978 and 1980, at the nearest convenient date;

Excludes nursing cadets and agency nurses. 3. It is not possible to identify separately those ancillary staff employed in hospitals only, therefore figures relating to all staff are shown. 4. Excludes pupil and agency midwives. Includes tutorial midwives. 5. Includes home nurses with and without district training as these cannot be separately identified for the earlier year. 6. Excludes tutorial staff and TB visitors owing to problems of comparability with the earlier year. 7. Includes support staff managers but excludes ambulance officers. The number shown for 1971 includes an estimate of the equivalent of staff who were transferred from local authorities to the NHS in 1974 along with the transfer of work as part of the 1974 reorganisation. However, not all local authority staff engaged in NHS work were transferred with the work and additional staff had to be recruited by the NHS to replace them. For this reason the 1971 figure (shown in brackets) is not directly comparable with the 1978 figure and cannot be used to make any valid judgement about the increase in NHS administrative and clerical staff between the two dates.
