§ Mr. Dalyellasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether there is sufficient scientific evidence available to indicate what catches of Krill may be allowed, and in what areas in the southern oceans, without affecting the recovery of populations of severely endangered whale species, such as the Blue and Humpback whales.
§ Mr. Buchanan-SmithThe International Whaling Commission recognises that the exploitation of krill in the southern oceans may affect whale stocks to an extent that at present is largely unknown; it will consider the implications for whales of management regimes for other marine resources at its 32nd annual meeting in July. The proposed Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources will offer a means of ensuring that krill is harvested at levels which take into account the requirements of whales and other dependent species in the area.
