HC Deb 06 May 1980 vol 984 c100W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what work is being undertaken by the Commission on the harmonisation of benefits for disabled people within the European Economic Community; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prentice

The Commission has to date presented no proposals on this matter. While it is the declared objective of the Community to harmonise the degree of social security afforded by the various member States, it has been explicitly agreed that this would not involve requiring the respective social systems to be identical.
