Mr. Colvin

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is his estimate of the total annual cost of education and training undertaken by his Department; and whether he is able to make an estimate of the cost of training carried out by the private sector.

Mr. David Mitchell

The estimated cost of training Department of Industry staff during the academic year 1978–79 was £l.5 million. This figure includes the salary and related costs of the students but excludes travel and subsistence costs, which are not separately identifiable.

I am not able to estimate the cost of training carried out by the private sector.
