§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is satisfied with the operation of the Trade Descriptions Act as it applies to notices in railway timetables that a buffet will be part of a particular train when no such buffet is provided.
§ Mrs. Sally OppenheimAlthough I sympathise with the plight of travellers who find themselves on a train where catering services have been cancelled without warning, I believe this type of problem is at present better dealt with through the nationalised industry consumer council arrangements. Indeed, train catering services have been looked at by the Central Transport Consultative Committee for Great Britain which has recommended that stations should clearly show when catering services are not going to be provided so that passengers can obtain refreshments from alternative facilities.

British Rail has undertaken to the committee to improve arrangements where possible. I hope that some improvement will soon be apparent.
A traveller who has not obtained a satisfactory response from British Rail to a specific complaint should approach his local transport users' consultative committee, with which I shall certainly keep in touch to ascertain the volume of such complaints.
