HC Deb 02 May 1980 vol 983 cc701-2W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether, in view of the higher survival rate among trained oil company employees on the " Alexander Keilland " as compared with employees of contractors and visitors, he will review the requirements for survival training on all North Sea structures.

Mr. Gray

We do not yet know the relative experience and training of survivors of the " Alexander Keilland " disaster, although this is one of the subjects under discussion with the Norwegians.

There are regulations in force requiring muster and abandonment drills on installations. Regular workers experience these drills and are usually given some survival training. Occasional visitors on board only for a short while are normally in the charge of a member of the regular offshore staff.

Requirements for survival training and drills are being reviewed as one of the recommendations in the Burgoyne report. Recent events will have a bearing on any changes to be made.
