Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why prisoners at Armley prison are engaged in the manufacture of anti-radiation suits; and what is the purpose of the task and the product.

Mr. Brittan

The items produced are carbon-bonded suits made under contract for the Ministry of Defence. The contract provides employment for prisoners. The purpose of the suits is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence.
