§ Baroness YOUNGIn the academic year 1978–79, which is the latest date for which information is available, there were in England and Wales 1,563 maintained special schools and 111 non-maintained special schools used for the most part by local education authorities. The non-maintained schools were situated in the areas of the following local education authorities:—
