How many maintained special schools there are in England and Wales, and how many non-maintained special schools used for the most part by local education authorities, and in which local education authority areas they are.

In the academic year 1978–79, which is the latest date for which information is available, there were in England and Wales 1,563 maintained special schools and 111 non-maintained special schools used for the most part by local education authorities. The non-maintained schools were situated in the areas of the following local education authorities:—
