The PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY of STATE, HOME OFFICE (Lord Belstead)

Information on the number of persons remanded in custody for mental examination and for reports on their state of health only is published annually inPrison Statistics, England and Wales (Table 10.7 of the issue for 1978, Cmnd. 7626). Corresponding information is not available on the number of persons remanded in custody for social inquiry reports. However, in 1978 about 7,000 males and 800 females were remanded in custody after conviction by magistrates' courts under the provisions of Section 14(3) of the Magistrates' Courts Act 1952 for the purpose of enabling inquiries to be made; these inquiries may have been medical or social, or both. Figures for 1979 are not yet available.
