The Solicitor-GeneralDetails of actual costs for 1979–80 will not be available until after the end of the financial year. In the published Supply Estimates provision has been made in respect of the court service in England and Wales for net expenditure of £47 million on administrative costs, including jurors' expenses, £19 million on prosecution and defence costs, £32 million on criminal legal aid, and £30 million on accommodation, including new buildings. This expenditure, which falls wholly on central Government funds, covers the same broad categories of expenditure as those given in the estimates for 1969–70 given in paragraph 330 of the Beeching report. Direct comparisons are not possible owing to changes in procedures in the intervening period. During the decade in question the volume of business in the higher criminal courts has approximately doubled, with a consequent requirement for increased manpower and court accommodation.
