Mr. Michael McGuire

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will list in the Official Report the salary scale since 1964 for civil servants in the following ranks: permanent secretary, deputy secretary, under secretary and assistant secretary.

Under secretaries, deputy secretaries and permanent secretaries are paid flat rates. Assistant secretaries had a seven point scale which was shortened to its present five points on 1.1.75. The above tables do not include the pay supplement of £208.80 per annum paid to permanent secretaries, deputy secretaries and undersecretaries from August 1976 until January 1978 and to assistant secretaries between August 1976 until April 1978; nor do they include the variable threshold payments paid to all grades between June 1974 and January 1975. The grades of under-secretary and assistant secretary attract London weighting in addition to basic pay shown in the tables. London weighting is currently £780 per annum for

Inner London and £325 per annum for Outer London.
