asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will make a statement on the current position of inquiries by Sir Derek Rayner into the Civil Service.

I refer my hon. Friend to the answers I gave to the hon. Member for Wolverhampton, North-East (Mrs. Short), on 23 January and to my hon. Friend the Member for Staffordshire, South-West (Mr. Cormack) on 4 February. Some additional departmental scrutinies have since been agreed and I will publish the details in theOfficial Report.

The following are the additional scrutinies:

Department and Topic

Home Office The handling of applications for citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies.

H.M. Treasury The procurement and movement functions of United Kingdom Treasury and Supply Delegation.

H.M. Customs and Excise Topic 1. Present methods of revenue control of the production and warehousing of spirits. Topic 2 (Joint scrutiny with the Inland Revenue). Co-operation between the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise in their dealings with insolvent traders/taxpayers.

Department for National Savings The conversion to computers of premium savings bond records.

Paymaster General's Office The working relationships between the Paymaster General's Office and the banks.
