§ Mr. BrittanThe minimum retirement age for prison governors, as for most civil servants, is 60, and it is normal for a governor in charge of a prison, and for many more junior governors, to retire on or shortly after reaching that age; this does not constitute early retirement. On retirement a prison governor qualifies for a pension and lump sum, calculated according to length of service, under the principal Civil Service pension scheme.
