§ Mr. Ennalsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the scope and terms of reference of the study on pollution of the Norfolk Broads being carried out by the University of East Anglia; and what funds are being provided by the Department and the Anglian water authority.
§ Mr. KingThe stated objectives of the study by the University of East Anglia are:—
- (1) To assess the degree of eutrophication of the River Bure and the effects that this has upon established and potential river uses. The assessment will include the role of boat traffic upon induced turbidity of the water.
- (2) To assess, by use of nutrient budgets, the major factors responsible for eutrophic conditions, and to assess the likely effects on river quality of possible future changes in these factors.
- (3) To study pattern and extent of sediment movement and redeposition in the River Bure.
- (4) To reccomend remedial measures.
A three-year contract was let at a sum of £84,000; the Department of the Environment are paying two-thirds and the Anglian water authority one-third of the cost.

§ Mr. Ennalsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what he considers to be the maximum permissible level of phosphate which can be introduced in the Broads and elsewhere.
§ Mr. KingThe level will vary according to the quality objectives set by water authorities for the receiving waters, taking into account other local circumstances. The levels for the Broads have not yet been settled.
