HC Deb 18 March 1980 vol 981 cc181-2W
Mr. Bradley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether the action of Leicestershire county council in cutting the careers service by 38 posts is in accordance with the guidance he issues to local authorities under section 10(1)(a) of the Employment and Training Act.

Mr. Jim Lester

No statutory guidance under Section 10(1)(a) of the Employment and Training Act 1973 as to the number of careers officers or supporting staff is given in the guidance document issued to local education authorities, since it is for the authorities themselves to determine the staffing levels which are appropriate to the needs of their own services.

My careers service inspectors normally advise local education authorities that the ratio of careers officers to 15-year-old pupils in their areas should not be less favourable than 1:375 and that about an equal number of supporting staff should be appointed.
