HC Deb 14 March 1980 vol 980 cc722-3W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the estimated number of Rhodesians who were treated by British Army doctors during the period the monitoring force was in Rhodesia.

Mr. Hayhoe

The medical personnel who served with the British contingent of the Commonwealth monitoring force in Rhodesia were drawn from all three Services. As well as providing treatment for members of the monitoring force, the British Services medical team co-operated with ZANLA and ZIPRA medical staff in establishing medical services at 14 assembly points for some 22,000 Patriotic Front personnel assembled under the terms of the ceasefire. In addition, treatment was given to the local civilian population as required. Detailed records are not available, but it is estimated that in the more accessible assembly points up to 120 civilians a day received treatment.
