HC Deb 14 March 1980 vol 980 c730W
Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many deaths occurred in 1979 as a direct result of poliomyelitis, tuberculosis and diphtheria.

Sir George Young

There were no deaths assigned to poliomyelitis or diphtheria in England and Wales in 1979. A final figure for the number of deaths assigned to tuberculosis—including late effects—is not yet available; on the basis of information currently available, it is estimated that the number will be between 875 and 885.
