HC Deb 14 March 1980 vol 980 cc762-3W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the loan of five portraits, mentioned in his written answer, Official Report, 7 March, column 354, to the charitable trust which now owns Arundel Castle, for display to the public, is subject at all times to the discretion of the trustees of the National Portrait Gallery; and if he will state whether the reference to "the National Loan Fund" in his answer was an error for "the National Land Fund".

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 13 March 1980]: The portraits are in the ownership of the National Portrait Gallery whose trustees have resolved to allow them to remain in situ at their discretion. Under a loan agreement between the National Portrait Gallery and the Arundel Castle trustees, the latter will be required to hang the paintings on the normal public route for visitors to the castle and to maintain and care for them in accordance with the gallery's wishes. The gallery will also have the right to withdraw one or all of the portraits on a temporary basis for exhibition or purposes of study or maintenance.

The reference to the National Loan Fund given in my answer on 7 March was an error and the reference should have been to the National Land Fund.
